Somewhere along the line, after he rounded the corner of fifty, I realized that Id gotten over my hatred of Tom Cruise, our most sociopathic movie star. (And that is one high, high bar.) Hes like the male Madonna: Ive come to sympathize with his nearly persuasive mimicry of recognizable human emotion. Ive come to admire his will-to-power determination to act and look and talk like a superstar, even when everybody else in the world knows thats not true any longer, but no one has the heart to tell him. So now when he shows up, glittering, to smilingly dodge questions on some talk show while promoting his latest slab of product - after the de rigueur thunderous ovations from the studio audience, which we all know he needs, needs! - I chuckle and think, Aw, Tommy!
