Somewhere between toddler and Kindergarten… …Steve Kirkpatrick was at the house to check on a phone outage. He was working on the junction box, which was outside the dining room window at the time. I was on the inside playing. We would check on each other…he’d knock on the window…I’d try to talk to him…and so on. It went on for awhile… …’til I decided I’d open that window…one of the old wooden frame windows…the ones that had been painted in for years. I tried and tried…he shook his head and said, “James, no…” …I was relentless. As he got up to come to the door…I got it open…it flew up with a loud crash and all of a sudden, I was covered in glass and years of dirt. He looked at me…and called for my mom…and then put his hand through the window frame, on my shoulder and calmly told me, “you’re going to be okay…but we’re probably going to be in trouble.” I was at that age where I didn’t know my own strength…obviously. However, it was also a great age to see a hard-working man, who loved kids and was calm in a stressful situation…all the while still being a realist at what was coming. :) Steve passed away suddenly last night. He is “one of the good guys” for sure. I’m praying for his family…listening to both his tenor and lead voice in my head…and thanking God for the people who make up the mosaic of who I am today...the Father surely blesses us through good people.
