Son of 82 yr old local lady called this morning. His mom found 2 - TopicsExpress

Son of 82 yr old local lady called this morning. His mom found 2 instances where there had been debits to her checking account by IRS USA. After calling the IRS and finding out that they knew nothing about it, she drove to her bank. She spent an hour with them. They said they put alerts and holds on her account, and said theyd be watching her account from now on. The son was mad because she hadnt gotten any real help from the IRS, to which I said, if it wasnt the IRS that debited her account, they have nothing to do with it. The bank has the ability to track the money to whomever debited it, and I find it hard to believe that NO ONE at the bank said they would do that. I advised the son to have his mom go close the account, knowing how inconvenient it is, but saying that ultimately, that is the #1 best way to keep the debit from happening again. If she moved the account to another bank, it would be even more safe, because in the same bank, if the debit were to come in again, a bank teller could think it is really the IRS and simply look to see if there is a different account for that customer and boom, the debit goes against the new account. Mistakes do happen. I was in banking for 22 yrs. I also advised him to have his mother ask for the person in charge of the Customer Service area, then have them trace the debits back to the source, and that if it is deemed a scam, the bank needs to reimburse the lady, probably. This is a really good example of why you MUST always review your bank statements monthly. BBB cares!
