Son of God If one day a movie were produced about your life, what moment/story would it capture? If it were limited to around two hours, what events/relationships would it focus on? Would it be a comedy? A tragedy? A drama? Perhaps some of all three rolled together? How would it end? If one day a movie were produced about your life, what moment/story would it capture? And would people still be interested in your biography 2000 years from now? My guess would be—and this is certainly true of me—that our largely forgettable life movies would be largely forgotten less than 2000 days after their release dates. That’s why Shia LaBeouf quipped that “Sometimes I feel I’m living a meaningless life, and I get frightened.” And Shakespeare observed that life is a “tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” If this perspective depresses you (as perhaps it should)… then I have fantastic news for you. There was one life that was anything but meaningless, and it is a tale told by eyewitnesses full of grace and truth, signifying everything! It is the story of the Son of God, and if you are too busy or too weary to read about Jesus Christ in the gospels at this point on your life, you now have a great opportunity to travel back in time on the big screen to witness the most important life ever lived. A new movie, Son of God, from the same dynamic duo production team of Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel, The Bible mini-series) and her husband Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Voice, The Apprentice) gives us a glimpse into the strikingly radical, relational nature of Jesus’ life and ministry. How is it that after 2000 years we as a human race continue pondering, debating, conversing, agonizing, and yes, producing films about the God/Man from Nazareth? There are likely hundreds of reasons, but consider how extraordinary it is that a uneducated carpenter by trade who never accumulated earthly wealth or power, and never traveled more than 200 miles from his birthplace, still stands as the most influential figure in human history. All the armies that ever marched, All the navies that ever sailed, All the parliaments that ever sat, All the kings that ever reigned, Put together, have not affected the life of man on earth As much as that One Solitary Life. —Source: One Solitary Life by Dr James Allan Francis But this story can’t just be enjoyed as a movie or left to sit on the pages of the Bible. The Son of God has called you to carry on the work He began so long ago: “Believe me: I am in my Father and my Father is in me. If you can’t believe that, believe what you see—these works. The person who trusts me will not only do what I’m doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I’ve been doing. You can count on it. From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I’ll do it. That’s how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I’ll do” (John 14:11-14, The Message). Think about how you have been empowered to carry on His life for the rest of your life. These words from Jesus hold the key to escaping a meaningless life that is a tale told by idiots signifying nothing. When we get serious about THE Cause and doing the works of Jesus in our little corner of the world, our lives take on an eternal quality. In other words, when you live to serve Jesus Christ and advance His rule and reign, your “movie” will play on through infinity! Friends—go check out the Son of God movie, then think about how you have been empowered to carry on His life for the rest of your life. Can you hear these commands coming from heaven as the eyes of God are upon you.
