Song #4: The Christmas Song Yet another Christmas tune inspired by summer! 70 years ago, American composing duo Mel Tormé and Bob Wells were working on “The Christmas Song” (more commonly known as “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”). It was a stifling hot July afternoon in 1944. Wells was yearning for the cold Christmas. He scribbled: Chestnuts roasting….Jack Frost nipping… Yuletide carols…Folks dressed up like Eskimos…. Just then, Mel Tormé dropped by to visit. He saw the words, sat at the piano and started to play. Like a snowball, their inspirations rolled and within 45 minutes the song was done. At that time, Wells was 22, Tormé just 19. Nat King Cole recorded the song between 1946 and 1961, and subsequently Tormé added a new verse in 1963. Here is a version by Mel Tormé and Judy Garland (who played Dorothy in the award-winning film “Wizard of Oz”). Enjoy!
