Song For The Day - January 21, 2015 Back in the late 60s, when most of the new music was coming from the West Coast, I was a impressionable Mid-Western teen-ager about to start high school in a place called Plainwell. How depressing is that? For somebody out in the middle of nowhere, I was able to be in touch with what was going on out in the real world, via my little AM radio that I would have on all night long when I was suppose to be in bed and asleep. Late at night you could pull in stations from far away and so after the folks went to bed Id get back up and make lists of what I heard on the radio until early morning.. Back then there were record clubs and I was a member in good standing of Columbia House. The record company of Columbia Records. Every couple weeks theyd send out a new brochure full of new music and Id use my allowance and lunch money to buy a record or two from each new mailing. Things were going along fine until one day I received the wrong record. I dont remember now what Id ordered, but I received instead the first album by Country Joe & The Fish. I considered sending it back, but after looking at it for awhile I decided to throw caution to the wind and opened it, put it on my record player and let it go. By the end of side two my mind had been blown. From that day forward I was a CJ & TF fan and when I bought the second one some months later, the deal was sealed for life. That second album was a pivotal point in my musical education and I still dearly love that album today and yes, I still play it frequently. The songs are like old friends to me and I like to hear from them from time to time. So while everyone else seemed to be listening to the Grateful Dead, or Jefferson Airplane, I was in the CJ & TF camp. When the 3rd album came out I had to have it right away and when I put this on the turntable for the first time.....I smiled the whole way thru.
