Song a day no 4: While theres a tendency for English-speaking songwriters to look towards America, Scott Walker, obsessed as he was by Jacques Brel, ploughed the rich tradition of European song which owes as much to Schubert as it does to the delta blues. To me these songs smell of autumn leaves on canal banks, and resonate like bicycle bells on cobbled market squares. I have an unfulfilled ambition to write a set of songs like this and ask Jason Tenniswood Isaacs to sing them. With strings, naturellement.
