Song introduction #9: Paint Me a Picture youtu.be/-JrNG0dMdr0 open.spotify/album/07lpgwhyGquFphoXSeca95 Im not sure if its the last rebellion of my twenties but Paint Me a Picture certainly sprung from increased frustration with a lot of stuff thats going on. There is always an inherent naivete to a text expressing discontent over being lead along and forced to conformity. We are a generation of individualists and constantly pulled into two ideological directions: indulge yourself on the hand, and do as is expected on the other. That divide and the confusion it entails is probably the driving force behind the text. Complete independence would in all likelihood result in nothing but darwinist selfishness but the thought of individual freedom and the desire to be unique is quite rooted into our collective consciousness (ironically so). Whether it is the clothes we think we and others should wear, the careers we think we ought to pursue rather than what we truly desire to do or eating the food that we presume to be good for us because some blog said so, the blind following of the next thing comes scarily natural to us. Maybe that word... blind.. is what I wanted to protest against. We are lazy intellectuals in many ways. We receive knowledge but rarely have the time or energy to truly process or question it. This goes for both the established machine and the alternatives that pop up once in a while with a blazing sword of truth and righteousness. Lets just smarten up. Lets not be too sure of anything to not be able to question it, whether for or against it. Hence it our minds that were once lions, now kitties on a leash. The track was recorded with Niko Laasonen at E-studios. Working on guitars for this song was wonderful pain in the ass. The back beat strumming for the entire song probably left me just a few takes short of carpal tunnel syndrome. Ive also never gone as bananas with effect pedals as we did for the faint echoey thing in the background. This was the first time I truly got to play with my Dan Electro Reel Echo and we spend a good part of the day just toying around to find that perfect infinitely repeating noise... success. From what Niko has told me the processing on this song nearly blew up his computer so you can imagine how there is going on even if you dont hear it. The reason for that is probably that I wanted to make this song sound as unexpected as possible. Make it energetic and more rock than pop and yet keep the acoustic guitar the central instrument. We worked on the mix for a long time till we finally got it right and in retrospect I am very happy with the result and showed some serious mixing magic with sounds to make it intense enough.
