Song of Songs Day 21- Chapter 5 v 2-3-: Losing the First Love– “I I was asleep but my heart was awake… ” Thus begins the travail of the Bride, though she knows not the agony her attitude will soon bring. Her heart is awake—she is not backslidden, lost or apostate—but she has left off the passions of her first love for her Lord. Having grown accustomed to her relationship with the Bridegroom, the Bride becomes lazy and somewhat despondent to her NEED for intimacy with her Lord. Thus, the King comes to seek and to woo His beloved, but rather than respond in kind, she begins to make excuses for her lack of preparation and sleepy condition: I have taken off MY dress (She is no longer wearing her garment of praise, the righteous covering that is Christ’s gift to the Church). . . I have washed MY feet (she has found a righteousness of her own, she is satisfied with her own good works). Her self focus and spiritual lethargy cause the Bride to take her Lord for granted. This attitude of heart costs the Bride both intimacy and the very near presence of her King. Beloved, what about your heart and focus today: Are the fiery passions of your first love for Christ still burning white hot, or have you allowed the cares and worries of this life to cool your zeal? Are your heart and mind still Christ focused or have you become self focused? Come back to your first love. Allow the Holy Spirit to pour in the oil of His presence and fuel the fires of passionate devotion to the great Lover of your soul.
