Song of the Day. I was listing to a 2005 interview/lecture by ?uestlove; he offered lots of interesting insights about the music industry, such as that many current beatmakers serve as apprentices under well-known producers, and that their work is often uncredited. (For example, the 90s Teddy Riley jam Rumpshaker was actually written and produced by a young Pharrell Williams...and it wasnt Timbaland who actually produced Justin Timberlakes Cry Me A River, but his minion Scott Storch.) Anyways, ?uestlove told a story that a friend played him a demo cd by some 30-something guy during a car trip, and when he asked around, his record company replied, Yeah, we got that demo, and hes horrible -- you want that guy? I found the demo online, and yeah, its pretty amateurish...but its funny what can happen when someone is given the opportunity for his talent to develop, even at that age. Later that year, the guy essentially remade his demo alongside The Roots, which is why its called (2.0), and it became one of The Roots most well-known songs.
