Song of the day / La chanson de la journée : KEITH JARRETT : Köln Written by : Keith Jarrett Album : The Köln Concert : 1975 The Köln Concert is a concert recording by the pianist Keith Jarrett of solo piano improvisations performed at the Opera House in Cologne (in German: Köln) on January 24, 1975. There were plenty of problems that night : There was some confusion by the opera house staff and the wrong piano was used : a Bösendorfer intended for rehearsals and was in poor condition and required several hours of tuning and adjusting to make it playable. The instrument was tinny and thin in the upper registers and weak in the bass register, and the pedals did not work properly. Consequently, Jarrett often used ostinatos and rolling left-hand rhythmic figures during his Köln performance to give the effect of stronger bass notes, and concentrated his playing in the middle portion of the keyboard. Also, Jarrett arrived at the opera house late in the afternoon, had not slept well in several nights and was in pain from back problems and had to wear a brace. After trying out the substandard piano and learning a replacement instrument was not available, Jarrett nearly refused to play and the promoter, a 17 year old named Vera Brandes had to convince him to perform. Despite all that, the vinyl album was released in the autumn of 1975 by the ECM Records label to critical acclaim, and went on to become the best-selling solo album in jazz history, and the all-time best-selling solo piano album. Il y a eu toutes sortes de problèmes ce soir la. Il ya eu de la confusion par les opérateurs de la salle et le mauvais piano a été utilisée : un Bösendorfer qui était pour lusage des répétitions en mauvaise condition qui a pris plusieurs heures a être adjusté pour le rendre jouable. Le son de linstrument était mince et faible dans les notes basses et les pédales ne marchainet pas bien. Jarrett a du utiliser des ostinatos et des techniques avec sa main gauche pour bien faire sonner les notes basses et a du concentrer son jeu dans le milieu du piano. Aussi, Jarrett est arrivé tard dans laprès-midi , navait pas bien dormi et souffrait de douleurs au dos et portait une gaine pour son dos. Après avoir essayer le piano, Jarrett avait lintention de refuser de jouer mais la promoteusse, une jeune de 17 ans du nom de Vera Brandes la convaincue de jouer. En dépit de tout ça, lalbum est sortie à lautomne 1975 par ECM Recordsavec des crtitiques très positives, et cet album est devenue le plus vendu de lhistoire du jazz, et le plus grand vendeur de tous les albums de piano solo.
