Songlines: They connect country They connect us They help us navigate across the surface They guide us as we dive deep into ourselves They guided me to and through the abyss I danced them as I rediscovered joy of life I danced them again as my Yolngu identity grew Their threads weave a fabric Tapestry of our life A line has one dimension, A fabric has two Wrap ourselves and country in that fabric and the form has three We sing and dance through time and there are four Their imagery explained the deep workings of this universe Apollo holds my form in all sincerity Dionysius drinks wine with Kali and their dance smashes permanence This is the Dhuwa and Yirritja of things Conservation and change The essence of growth and evolution I shed my cultures ‘thou shalts’ to become a wheel rolling out of myself The European in me cannot be denied but the individual is tempered by connection gurrutu and love even Nietzsche, that infamous champion of European individualism, said that what is done out of love always takes place good and evil the urge to write my own songlines is strong they map what I know a song cycle returns with us wiser for the journey you will find many points where they intersect explore this landscape if you care what I know is not all beauty but the path to it is mapped The swamps and dark places hold monsters that would consume us They are deep inside of us Deep in our history Deep in our culture Deep in our politics Sing them to put them in Apollo’s light Then smash them with joyfull laughter as we dance with Dionysius They are only as strong as we let them be Knowledge brings power Too much power consumes those who wield it Sharing our knowledge is sharing our power Dissipated throughout our connected and loving community Not concentrated in some fools pyramid Together we are an oasis in the wasteland Together we sing and dance and laugh and grow Love rod
