Soni Akoji Nigeria Earmarks $1Billion To Curb Crude Oil Theft, Says Jonathan. Are you an oil Thief operating within Nigeria? Quit now or you shall be arrested, prosecuted and sent to jail. - President Goodluck Jonathan According to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, the FG has earmarked $1 BILLION (USD) which is equivalent to about N160 billion (Naira) for a comprehensive program to check crude oil theft, the vandalism of oil and gas infrastructure, and the apprehension and prosecution of oil thieves. Speaking at a meeting with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mr Mark Rutte and the CEO of Shell International, Mr Ben Van Beurden at the Hague, President Jonathan said that a technical committee has already been set up to look into all aspects of the implementation of the program. This will include further action to enhance the security of pipelines and other oil industry infrastructure, resolve community -related issues, boost youth employment in oil producing areas and enhance the commitment of oil companies to the discharge of their CSR. President Jonathan said the fresh onslaught against oil theft planned by his administration requires the maximum co-operation of the international community. In his words: Oil theft is an aspect of global terrorism, which has become a big industry on its own. It has become a major threat to the Nigerian economy and we need to work with all stakeholders to curb it. The thieves must be traced, apprehended and prosecuted, President Goodluck Jonathan who is attending the Global Nuclear Security Summit 2014 in the Netherlands, told his host.
