Sonia Hernández began her musical education at the age of 6 under the supervision of her parents, later studying under Oscar Zamora at the National Conservatory of Music of Lima, Peru, where she won First Prize Honors. In 1991, she continued her studies in classical guitar under Demetrio Ballesteros at the Royal Superior Conservatory of Music of Madrid and received First Prize Honors. In 2000, Ms. Hernández moved to New York to complete her musical education at Mannes College of Music, where she earned her Masters Degree in classical guitar under Michael Newman. She has attended prestigious guitar festivals and master classes, including Music in Compostela under José Luis Rodrigo, the Manuel de Falla International Festival of Granada under Pepe Romero in Spain, the Domaine Forget festival under Fabio Zanon, in Quebec, Canada, the Winter Guitar Festival at Ithaca College under Eduardo Fernández, the Peabody Guitar Summer Course under Manuel Barrueco and the Mannes Guitar Seminar under Sharon Isbin. She has also been awarded scholarships by the Municipality of Madrid, Mannes College of Music and the New York Foundation for the Arts, among others. In the New York area, Ms. Hernández gave a solo recital at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 2004. She has also performed at Merkin Hall, New School University’s Tishman Auditorium, Mannes Concert Hall, Columbia University, Rutgers University and Americas Society. She has also performed in Spain at the American Museum of Madrid, Casa de America, Madrid, and at the Ateneo of Barcelona, as well as giving concerts in Peru, Canada and Vienna.
