Sonnys update. We now have an oncologist, a diagnosis and a treatment plan, all in one day. Hurrah! For all of you who were hoping and praying for lymphoma with us, we win! The speech therapist was hoping right along with us, although she said shed never hoped for lymphoma before. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system that runs all through our bodies. Apparently it travels around the brain too. Who knew?! The lymph system if usually a big part of what keeps us healthy, but not much fun when it becomes cancerous. Lymphoma in the brain is fairly rare and doesnt have much to do with lymphoma in the body. The things you learn at the Oncology Centre! Not what we would have wished for on our Christmas list, but at least it gives Sonny more than a fighting chance, compared to the other choices. He will be receiving chemo at the QEH every other week for ten treatments. So that will take him through till March. We can now plan and find some kind of routine, even if it wasnt what we had in mind for our winter. And hes strong and healthy otherwise and under excellent care. As his surgeon said Sonny has a great spirit. His risk of infection is more from himself than anyone else, so visitors will be welcome, at least on the week that hes home here. Not too many at once though, as it tires him to try to follow too many conversations or people. His filtering system aint what it used to be. There may come a time when I ask for help with sitting with him at the hospital, but right now he is most comfortable with those who are most familiar to him. The tumor is sitting on the area of the brain that controls comprehension and communication. Dr. Champion explained that usually a person with this type of tumor has trouble either processing what is said to him or saying what he wants to say, but not usually both. Sonny is having struggles with both directions. But weve learned some helpful strategies to help him cope with this and can share them with you, if youd like to visit at some point. They arent complicated. Poor neglected Mikaela is doing fine after her surgery, but feels a little torn and that she should be home to help out. We should all give her a resounding let yourself heal first Mik shout-out. Followed by virtual hugs and kisses, of course. I dont think Ive ever been as proud of our three girls as I have the last month. Theyve grown up to be such thoughtful, helpful, intelligent people. Whod a thunk it? Now that our crisis time is over(or so we hope), I think its time to bow out and quit hogging the fb space for awhile. But feel free to message me anytime if you want to check in or come to visit. And once again, thanks for all the supportive comments, prayers, concern and favors.Keep em coming. And we hope to get you back some day!
