Sony/ATV Music Publishing looks to break away from ASCAP and BMI (the performing rights societies currently held to antiquated royalty collection rate laws) so they can leverage stronger direct deals with the streaming services. The root of the problem still goes back to congress needing to legally apply fair royalty rates for digital across the board. This article addresses concerns with major publishers breaking away from the PROs.
