Soo....just had an awesome conversation with Suzie Gilb regarding vocal music. My experience with high school and college was one where vocal music was taught through identifying range, then application of that range via choral singing and/or voice lessons. The missing component is something that I as an artist is asked about all the time: who are your influences? I dont remember ever even hearing of a class where someone identified my range and then turned me on to other vocalists in various genres to show me how others with similar instruments had applied them. Instead my experience was the same as it often is in interviews: who do you admire? or what genre specific traits do you use in your performance technique/vocal style? THOSE are two very different questions that I dont think Ive ever been actually asked...instead I get the whole who do you sound like....well, let me perform for you for an hour and you can tell me by song who you think I sound like. Its rather interesting that folks believe that a singular experience of listening to a single song can tell you all you need to know about a voice when truly thats nearly entirely about vocal approach. So this begs me to ask, when a non-music person learns about music---do you truly simplify it to this person sounds like this or do you recognize that a given song is simply an singular act of art and not that artist entire spectrum of ability?
