Sophie had her ABA group today. There is a concern I have but Im not sure how to voice it. Because its not about Sophie. There are 3 other boys in her group and they all have their own therapists. The focus of the group is PECS and they work on it at whatever level they are at (Sophie is at phase 2 like I mentioned). She loves going I can see she runs in, doesnt look back, plunges right into activities and is happy when I come to pick her up. My concern. 2 of the boys are prone to meltdowns. Today one was by the door crying trying to leave. His therapist was pulling him away but her face was expressionless and she wasnt verbally reassuring or trying to distract him. Basically just pulling him from the door with a deadpan expression. Its so against my nature, I comfort Sophie the way I would any child. Lots of reassuring words, sshhhh, and offering hugs and distraction. This really disturbed me. But- he is not my child, my philosophies about autism dont mesh well with the mainstream, she is not Sophies therapist. (Sophies therapist is very sweet, I often find Sophie cuddling on her lap when I come to pick her up). I guess Im always on high alert, in any of those situations. I want Sophie to have learning opportunities and she is doing well there (you should see her data... Full of check marks :)). I have a feeling though that me budding in would not make anything better and just create tension between us and the therapists. Thoughts?
