Sorely disappointed in the destruction by fire, last night, of the Younkers building in downtown Des Moines, under reconstruction at the time. AND WONDERING: What possesses an owner to have no working fire extinguishing capability (and no automatic alarm system) for an element of reconstruction that should be in operation as soon as possible during the most vulnerable and dangerous phase of remodeling and rehab work? Could horrible owner decision-making in that regard be the consequence of inept and incompetent people either taking a holiday from common sense or deviating from norms to save dollars in the short term? Suspect the extent of destruction has destroyed any solid trace of cause. Perhaps another forensic tool could be useful - certain that something of note will follow, as damages extend well beyond this fallen building. At this point, wishing both DMPD and insurance investigators the best in both luck and needed cooperation to solve this puzzle, that we may never experience such property and landmark loss, again, in Des Moines.
