Sorry I almost forgot.. This is for those of you that asked.. Do You Have What It Takes To Become A Fighter Pilot? I Believe With Discipline And Commitment you can reach any goal. Do you remember this story? June 8, 2006 two U.S. F-16 fighters executed a dynamic mission that ended in taking out Abu-Musab Al-Zarqawi one of Iraqs most notorious terrorists.. wanted for a string of deadly kidnappings and terrorist attacks. Al-Zarqawi was considered a master Internet propagandist, spreading the call for Islamic extremists to join the “jihad,” or holy war, in Iraq. His group posted gruesome images of beheadings, speeches by al-Zarqawi and recruitment videos. The two F-16s were executing a Close Air Support (CAS) mission which involves dropping highly explosive ordnance in very close proximity to ground forces. As you might imagine, such a mission requires a great deal of training and a high level of precision. And, here are some insights on the June mission that you might not have heard on the news: - The two pilots most likely did not know as they were launching that day that they were going to take out Iraqs most notorious criminal. They were initially airborne only to provide alert. In other words, they were in the area just waiting for something to happen. This, of course, highlights the need for discipline as a fighter pilot. These two F-16 pilots did a great job of responding at a moments notice and executing their attacks with precision and speed. A wise man once said, Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. And while I personally dont believe in luck, I definitely believe in the value of preparation. Both F-16 pilots were well prepared that day and it just happened to be their opportunity to shine. - The highly explosive ordnance that day were two 500 pound bombs, a GBU-12 and a GBU-38. A GBU-12 is guided by laser energy while a GBU-38 gets its guidance from GPS coordinates and an on-board navigation system. In the case of the GBU-12, the bomb is guided by a laser. This highlights the need for precision as a fighter pilot. Even a few meters left or right and that bomb could have missed the target -- and a most wanted terrorist would have gotten away. - Finally, do you have the discipline and precision required to be a fighter pilot? If you believe this may be for you, and youre prepared to do what needs to be done -- go for it.. make it happen! All you need is a little training. That is what you are going to get as an Air Force, Navy,or Marine Corps fighter pilot. So, just keep your prioritys in the right order, work hard, stay disciplined...and good things will happen.
