Sorry I havent posted lately about Chris. It has been busy! Chris is now in rehab (today was day 9), Bart is about to start school and Will is getting some assistance for speech and behavior set up. He was moved to rehab last week. Everyday has brought some type of progress. Last week he was dressed in his own clothes for the first time. The folie catheter was taken out (he wears depends now.) His pelvic muscles and brain are strengthening and slowly coordinating. On Monday he was decannulated and starting talking for the first time. Tuesday he walked with a walker across the room for the first time. Wednesday he drank from a cup by himself. Thursday he was approved for nectar thickened liquids, but is still on pureed foods. Today he opened up on his feelings to the nurse. He is still having days where he doesnt open up, seems mentally foggy, but usually knows who we are. His movements are extremely jerky and has tremors. Ataxia is what is used to describe it. There are days hes clear minded, we can have conversations verbally and he knows what is going on/who people are. However, that can easily slip away or come within moments it seems. He gets really happy when the boys are near him and still enjoys interacting with them. They seem to flip his switch very easily and he does everything he can to show them he IS improving and becoming more like the daddy they knew. Ive talked with his doctor at the rehab and Im still processing most of the information. Chris is considered severe when it comes to his brain injury. We will know in about a year to year and a half what his mental status will be for the rest of his life. Right now it is intense rehab for the next few months (depending on how long insurance will approve). As for his burns, he might get laser treatments to reduce some of the scarring to help with mobility in the future. He has a few spots that keep tearing open, but no current need for skin grafting. Part of the issue is Chriss desire to hold Jethro on his chest, another is that Chris is so active now. The great news is that it all bleeds! The not so good news is that hes on blood thinner, so it takes a while to stop the bleeding. Overall he is on the up and up.
