Sorry, I know some people who love animals will take issue with the point of this article. However, I think its important. Hunting is a necessity to survival for those of the Inuit--where many do not have enough to eat. They hunt seals. Its not for sport, and they use all parts of the seal... Favorite comment on Huff Po… Peter Turner: As a Canadian, Im offended that a lesbian Hollywood celebrity (and by the way Im in full support of gay marriage, which weve had in OUR country for over a decade) asks that people not pass judgement on her life choices, is completely ready to pass judgement on something she clearly knows nothing about. Living with her wife in the largest port on the west coast, with the fruit and vegetable source for the entire US 100 km away, Ellen clearly doesnt understand Northern Canadian realities. We live 1000 to 2000 km from the nearest farm. Every fruit, vegetable, gallon of milk and southern meat is trucked or flown in. Its a little hard to be a vegan when your average income is $16,669 per year and a head of cabbage costs $28! Its nice for Ellen to take a Hollywood stance on a trendy issue, but shes WAY off base on something she knows nothing about. The last time I was in Iqaluit, I saw a great local poster of several Inuit children in seal skin parkas hugging a baby calf and saying save the baby Veals. Use of sealskin leverages 1000s of years of craftsmanship, preserves traditional culture and diet, generates income for a population who live below the poverty line, and promotes the 100 mile diet concept; and the resulting clothing doesnt have the carbon footprint and other costs of shipping synthetic parkas 10,000 km from a clothing factory in China. - Peter Turner Yukon Territory, Canada
