Sorry for the multiple postings.. so many good articles in the paper this morning.! This one is about technology in school. I think its important to not throw the baby out with the bathwater on the iPad stuff.. My kids have done some pretty cool things with them. From the HT: Students demonstrate how technology enhances learning Posted: Saturday, May 10, 2014 12:00 am | Updated: 3:09 pm, Sat May 10, 2014. By Mary Keck 812-331-4353 | mkeck@heraldt It was standing room only this week when studentsand faculty from MCCSC shared how technology and academics are integrated at school. Using his iPad, 9-year-old Garrett Baker turned his research paper on Jim Davis, the creator of the Garfield comics, into an iMovie. When he held his iPad over a copy of his essay, Garrett’s iMovie started loading automatically. Using online search engines to research, he was able to produce a video with a mix of information, comic strips and photos of Davis and the lasagna-loving cat that Garrett could share with his classmates. Monroe County Community School Corp. board members, parents and community members heard from students about using technology to create digital art, produce videos, communicate with pen pals in Taiwan, complete group work with Google Docs and study world languages with digital textbooks. Tara Ganguly, a fifth-grader from Binford Elementary, used an online service called DuoLingo to learnGerman. “It’s really fun,” she said. “It’s not just giving you vocabulary.” Tara can speak into her iPad in German, and a message will appear that indicates if she has said the phrase correctly. She can also type in a sentence in English to see and hear the German translation. Ten-year-old Eli Sparks from University Elementary had a collection of his photos and research materials in Google Docs. “It’s useful to be able to share it with the whole class,” Eli said. Eli collected information about his school to create a photo essay to send to his digital pen pal in Taiwan. He was able to give the students in another country a glimpse of the hallways, lockers, teachers and principal of University Elementary. “Technology is something they’re going to need in the future,” said Liesl Loudermilk, who teaches fourth and fifth grade at University. At another station, students were creating works of art. Caitlyn Betar, eighth-grader at Jackson Creek Middle School, has always liked to draw using a pencil and paper, but by sketching digitally, she has more options. “It has an undo button,” Betar said with a laugh. The array of colors to choose from also seems limitless when you’re using technology to illustrate. “It’s traditional education in a nontraditional way,” said Cheryl Maxwell, who teaches art at Grandview Elementary. She noted her students still learn the basics of line, color and shape, but teachers are able to meet them where they are by embracing technology in the classroom. “We can come together culturally on a common ground and show we’re still evolving and not stagnant,” she said. “The best part of the evening for me, was seeing the excitement on the students’ faces,” said Jason Taylor, MCCSC’s director of E-Learning Strategies. “They were proud to show off their hard work. I am so proud of them!” heraldtimesonline/news/schools/students-demonstrate-how-technology-enhances-learning/article_d03d7df1-94c0-53bb-9bb8-d8632817cc59.html
