Sorry this is a long post! Im interested in advice - in April Im moving to a new post, so a new garden. It is in the UK (Wiltshire) in a conservation area and some trees in addition have specific TPOs. Part of it is a fragment of an old vicarage kitchen garden so walled and hedged. At a guess 30 ft by 50 ft space (weve only visited once since I was offered the post and didnt do full measurements!). On google image it looks as if this area is completely shaded by mature trees when in leaf. We are thinking that this might be a great area for a natural pond (much larger than the 2 we currently have :) ) with some natural wildflower planting (responsibly sourced bulbs / seeds) around it that will enjoy the shade - native bluebells, winter aconites, snowdrops, white anemones, ransomes. In the past someone has tried planting gooseberry bushes and currant canes - obviously thinking kitchen garden rather than paying attention to the surrounding 50 ft plus conifers/ laurels/ deciduous trees (sycamores among others I havent yet identified). Ive no idea at this stage what chemicals may have been added and will do a soil test. So is there any value in leaving some of the fruit bushes? Are there any food crops that might grow in this amount of shade (apart from my ransomes)? and can I put my acer there (sorry but I love it, it was a gift in a post before I came here and Im not a permaculture purist). Any other advice?
