Sorry this is a pretty lengthy story......Earlier today I went to taylor mart and as I was walking up to the door I saw a young guy and a child with bags around them. The little girl was crying. So i asked were they ok. I guess the dad was kicked out of HALO over a disagreement about food. The dad stated he had no where to go and needed a place to stay for the night until he could talk to his case manager in the morning. My heart went out for the little girl so I called HALO to see why they put the child out on the street. One of the workers stated he could not discuss the case and it was a case managers decision to put him out on the street. I asked for the case managers # to question this judgement call to kick him out, regardless what he did, and not call human services for the child. The case manager was not available. So after going around & around with HALO worker I finally got a number to call that maybe could help this homeless dad with his child. So I called Love & Charity where the woman who answered stated they could not help because they could not take a child in d/t they had all men there. So I asked did she know of any resources that could help them. She stated no. So i called The Womans Resource Center. The lady on the phone at least attempted to try and help. She gave me a couple numbers...one being a church that when I called I got a voicemail so I left a message. No call back. I called the next number 211 which is an emergency # for all cities in Wisconsin & they told me to call Halo and that was all the assistance they had. My last resort, which should have been my first, I contacted Beth David. I told her the guy said if he could get a ride to kenosha he could stay with his sister for the night. I was afraid to take him by myself. I asked a few people to go with but they were busy. Beth got right on it and contacted people....just concerned citizens...who were willing to help out immediatly. One was a hotel manager who offered a room. Thankful there are still people with a heart out here. It really is appalling that we have a homeless issue here in America...let alone in the city I live in. Whats even more appalling is everyone had a closed eye to the situation. Our city had no resources or assistance to help this homeless family!! None of these organizations could lead me to a solution, even though this was what they do. Well after all this they have a roof over their head tonight and I pray for the sake of the child that his case manager can assist him tomorrow!!! We can all close our eyes to this situation...but dont think for one minute it couldnt be you!!!! Statistics show most Americans are a pay check away from being homeless!!
