Soul Suite Birthday remembrance to Edwin Starr (January 21, 1942 – April 2, 2003). He was born Charles Edwin Hatcher in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1942. He first recorded for the small record label Ric-Tic, and later for Motown Records after the latter absorbed Ric-Tic in 1968. Agent DoubleOSoul was his first release which charted at, UK No 8, US No 21, hit in 1965, followed by, Back Street, Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.) US hit in 1966, Headline News, I Want My Baby Back, in 1968 the reissue of Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S.) / Headline News as a double a side made it to No 11 in the UK charts, also in 1968, Twenty-Five Miles scored in both the US & UK, he made a Disco version of 25 Miles later. The biggest hit of his career, was the Vietnam War protest song War which climbed to No 3 in the UK & No 1 in the US, the song was co written & produced by Norman Whitfield. Stop The War Now was the 1970 follow up, then came, Funky Music Sho Nuff Turns Me On a US R&B/Soul No 6 hit in 1971,There You Go in 1973 & many others. Edwin Starr reappeared on the charts with a pair of disco hits, (Eye-to-Eye) Contact and H.A.P.P.Y. Radio. Contact was the more successful of the two, peaking at No 65 on the US pop charts, No 13 on the R&B/Soul chart, No 1 on the Disco chart, and No 6 on the UK Singles Chart, Happy Radio made it to No 9 in the UK. He continued to tour mostly the UK & Europe where we had adopted him. He was a fun man with such a great voice & loved what he did. On April 2, 2003, at the age of 61,Edwin Starr suffered a heart attack and died while taking a bath at his home in Nottingham. R.I.P Edwin you will always be missed.
