Sound designers are important, yes. Take away their award? No, thanks. BUT, Musical Director? Whats that? One of the most important, influential, and necessary members of the creative team in a MUSICal (not a Choreographical, or Directical, or Costumical, Lightical, etc...) has been ignored by the the theatre community since its Tony Award category was eliminated in 1964. Choreographers and directors get names above the title, even, while the guy (or gal) who causes and facilitates the composers (and lyricists) work to be performed in any way that makes sense, is relegated to an afterthought. Obviously a Sound Designer is necessary (as are many other members of the team) but I think those up in arms about the (foolish, I admit) Tony Committee eliminating this category are missing out on some important other truths about the industry. ...Okay, back to my dark pit now...
