‘Sounds of Our Heritage’ to be held Dec. 3 Morehead State University’s Kentucky Center for Traditional Music will present an evening of traditional music Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Morehead Conference Center. “Sounds of Our Heritage” is the finale concert by all sections of band classes offered for the fall semester. Ensemble classes are offered in several styles, Bluegrass, Old Time String Band, Old Time Country, and groups that address those styles plus, Western Swing, Celtic, Blues and Gospel and a Traditional Vocal Ensemble. MSU’s students have represented and the music and culture of the Appalachian Mountains regionally and internationally at such venues as the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, Tenn., Marion Theater in Marion, Va., City Winery in New York City, and concert tours in Ireland and the People’s Republic of China. With a strong history of education in the field of traditional music, MSU was the first to offer a minor in traditional music in 2000 and now offers a four-year degree approved by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (Traditional Music) is the first baccalaureate degree with robust traditional music curriculum focusing on musical styles including Bluegrass, Old Time and Country Music offered in the commonwealth and the first approved by the NASM. In addition to the academic program in traditional music and active performance schedule, the Center also houses the “Traditional Music Archives” that supports the academic program and where students and the public can access a unique catalogue of audio, video and printed traditional music materials.
