Source- Hindustan Times MUMBAI: It took seven surgeries to make Sanjay Patra, 32, who was bedridden with a bone ailment for 15 years, to walk again. A resident of Odisha, Patra was detected of Ankaylosing spondylitis, a condition where different bones fuse into each other causing them to stiffen and become immobile. “He was lying on the bed like a log of wood. He was unable to even get up from the bed,” said Dr SS Mohanty, professor, orthopedic department, KEM Hospital, Parel. After consulting doctors, Patra’s father Khetramohan brought him to KEM Hospital. “This was our last hope. We wanted to see him stand and walk again,” said Khetramohan. Admitted to the hospital about three months ago, Patra underwent four major and three minor procedures. Efforts of the surgical team and the family paid off on June 2, when Patra with the help of a walker took a few steps. “Now, I will be able to walk again. I will even look for some job to support my parents,” said Patra who could only complete his schooling owing to the disease. Khetramohan, a farmer sold his land and spent close to Rs 4 lakh for the implants. Doctors said that Patra was detected of the condition, when he was nine years old. “Before the operations, he could not even bend his spine but now with artificial limbs his spine is also moving,” said Dr Mohanty. As the condition has no cure, Patra will have to undergo regular physiotherapy exercises to improve and retain mobility.
