Source: Newcastle Herald A MAN who decapitated a dog in a Port Stephens backyard was jailed for two years yesterday after Newcastle Local Court heard that he refused to speak to police or doctors after the disturbing attack. Kyel Kevin Parkes, 28, was assessed by mental health staff after he was arrested and refused to speak last August. Parkes had fought with his partner on the morning of July 31 last year when he began damaging his own car at their Lemon Tree Passage home, a statement of facts said. The partner locked herself in the home when she saw Parkes stabbing the bonnet with a knife. She let him inside when it appeared that he had settled down. She was playing with their three-month-old Staffordshire terrier when Parkes started staring at her and the dog. He then walked over, picked up the dog and walked to the backyard, the statement said. Parkes then decapitated the dog with a knife. The partner screamed and struck Parkes a number of times, but he held the knife towards her and said, ‘‘Don’t anyone come near me’’, before he walked through the house carrying the dog’s head and left. The partner screamed for someone to call police while she drove to Paul’s Corner at Salt Ash to wait for officers to arrive. They attended the home and found blood inside and outside of the home. They were unable to find Parkes until they received information the following morning that he had driven to bushland off Oyster Farm Road. He was arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace police station where he refused to speak. He was taken to a mental health unit where he remained mute until it was determined he was not suffering a mental illness. Parkes pleaded guilty to killing the dog, intimidating his partner and driving offences. He was already on good behaviour bonds for domestic violence offences, stealing and trespassing, the court heard. Magistrate David Day sentenced Parkes to two years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 16 months for killing the dog. He also placed Parkes on good behaviour bonds for three years and disqualified him from driving for two years for the other offences. Parkes will be eligible for release in May next year.
