(Source: Telegraph) Kohima, Aug. 4: The nearest police lock-up at Pfutsero town being 10km from the village, a youth organisation of Zhavame hamlet in Nagaland’s Phek district, bordering Manipur, has taken it on itself to punish criminals. The youths have constructed a concrete jail in the heart of the village to house offenders. The organisation enjoys the support of the village council, as the initiative has brought down the crime level. However, the initiative clearly indicates their lack of confidence in law-enforcing agencies. A youth leader said the youths were more concerned with the economic growth of the village and its flora and fauna and that they would continue to check criminal activities. “We punish them according to their degree of crime,” the youth leader, who did not want to be identified, said, adding that even militants were not spared and put behind bars for creating problems in the village. Parliamentary secretary for higher education Deo Nukhu appreciated the efforts of this organisation. He said even cadres of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah) were lodged at the “Youth Jail” for vitiating the peaceful environment of the village. Criminals were handed over to the police on several occasions after completing their time at the village jail. Another task of the organisation is to check destruction of flora and fauna in the village. The youths said cadres of the NSCN, who has a battalion camp near the village, have been randomly destroying flora and fauna despite their resentment and complaints. The organisation has already lodged a complaint with the higher authorities of the outfit. “We have told Thiungaleng Muivah about the activities of the cadres,” a youth leader said. The youths have confiscated several guns from people across the border who come hunting within the village jurisdiction. “We are a self-sufficient village,” another youth leader said. telegraphindia/1130805/jsp/northeast/story_17194398.jsp#.UgEFf9JmiSo
