Sources say Mr Iya who doubles as the General Manager of the Cameroon Cotton Development Company, SODECOTON, was apprehended while returning from Togo where he went to attend the Indomitable Lions World Cup qualifier against the Sparrow Hawks in Lome on Sunday. Though no reasons have been officially advanced for his arrest, sources suggest it is linked to Iya’s troubles at the state-owned SODECOTON, which he has been managing for years. In March, the Budgetary and Financial Disciplinary Council indicated that the General Manager of the Cameroon Cotton Development Company, Iya Mohamed has been found wanting of 20 managerial lapses that cost the state over FCFA 9 billion. Mr Iya was fined FCFA 2 million and the council recommended that he should not be trusted with any public office for the next seven years. The 20 managerial lapses were uncovered after the Budgetary and Financial Disciplinary Council scrutinised the files of SODECOTON between 2005 and 2010. The verdict which was contained in a communique duly signed by the president of the Budgetary and Financial Disciplinary Council, Henry Ayebe Ayissi indicated the SODECOTON file is still under scrutiny. This implied many more lapses may crop up in the future. Iya’s international passport was confiscated by airport police of the Douala International Airport in March while he was about to travel to France for a meeting. The Arrest of FECAFOOT’s strong man comes nine days to general elections at the federation that will elect a new president and members of the executive committee. The elections which were due to hold last May 25 where suspended a day before for ‘security reasons.’ With Iya in custody, his dream of ever running for FECAFOOT’s presidency again has been wholly crushed even though on May 24, the Arbitrary and Conciliatory Chamber of the National Olympic and Sports Committee ruled that he was not eligible to seek re-election.
