South Africa has produced world-famous jazz musicians, notably Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba, Jonathan Butler, Chris McGregor, and Sathima Bea Benjamin. Today, songs reflect a number of different styles such as gospel, jazz and rock, but often have a strong local flavour. Styles such as kwaito (house music), mbube (Zulu vocal) and kwela (jazzy street music often with a penny whistle) incorporate indigenous sounds. South Africa became famous for its varied theatre, dance and performance art history with the likes of John Kani, Winston Ntsona, Zakes Mda, Athol Fugard, Maishe Maponya, Matsemela Manaka, Bloke Modisane, Gibson Kente, Workshop 71, Mannie Manom, Simon Barney, Brett Bailey, Robyn Orlin, Aubrey Sekhaby, Fatima Dike, William Kentridge, Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom etc. There is a very large theater infrastructure, which is visible in different spots and different sized theater halls especially in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. Intensive experiments have been done with different genres such as minimalist theater, absurd theatre, physical theater, dance theatre, pantomime, musical, melodrama, tragedy, comedy, ballet narrative dance, contemporary dance etc. We are learning so much from our South African great artists and friends such as Thembi Todd, Hugh M. Also Big thank you to Charlotte Khoza, Mandisa Kay, Nobayeni Xaba and the great Band from Nigeria, Nelson Enaiho and Co for coming to Eritrea in May 2014. Our Comrade and Friend, Ambassador of South Africa to the State of Eritrea, H.E. Iqbal Jhazbhay. All reports have emphasised the work you are doing and the importance of building people-to-people links as a means of sustaining a healthy, strong and mutually beneficial relationship - Well Done Ambassador! Greetings & Big Thank you! Yared Tesfay.
