South Africa is a better place today than it was in 1994. Not only is this a daily reality felt by millions of South Africans, it is further affirmed by the quantitative statics tracked over time by the South African government as encapsulated in the Development Indicators 2012 Report launched yesterday, 20 August 2013, by the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation. The African National Congress welcomes the sixth edition of the Development Indicators report launched by Minister in the Presidency, Comrade Collins Chabane yesterday and confirms from the daily experiences of our people the words of the Minister that “indeed life has changed for the better since 1994 and the country is steadily making progress in the key priorities it has set for itself.” In pursuance of the mandate the ANC received from the electorate in 2009, the ANC takes particular pride in the following achievements, amongst many others, as contained in the report On creating decent work and sustainable livelihoods > The Expanded Public Works Programme created from approximately 200 000 work opportunities created in 2004/5 to the more than 3,7 million work opportunities over the period to 2011/12 > The Community Works Programme has created 160 000 work opportunities since 2009, a threefold increase in just 3 years. Of these opportunities more than 100 000 women benefited, 54 000 young people and 972 people with disabilities > The Disability Grant currently benefits more than 1 300 000 people with disabilities, giving much needed relief to the vulnerable and often marginalized in out society On Education> > > The percentage of young children (between 0 – 4 years) attending Early Childhood Development (ECD) Facilities has increased by 18.4% ensuring quality care and education from our children at a young age > The number of children enrolled for Grade R has increased from 300 000 in 2003 to 705 000 in 2011 > In 2012, the pass rate of the National Senior Certificate exceeded that of 2003, which had been the highest since 1994 On Health> > > Life expectancy increased from 52.7 in 2007 to 58.7 in 2012, a testament that our people are living longer because of amongst others the implementation of comprehensive strategies to combat Communicable Diseases inclusive of HIV and AIDS > Child Mortality has decreased from 92.9 lives per 1 000 live births in 2002 to 56.6 in 2013 > Severe malnutrition in children under 5 years has drastically dropped from 88 971 children in 2001 to 23 500 in 2013 While there is still must more to be done, the African National Congress takes pride in the many successes recorded by South Africans in our common quest together to build a better life. The National Development Plan has outlined a roadmap to a tomorrow that is even better today. The African National Congress is confident that, as a country, we are on the right track as evidenced by the progress contained in the Development Indicators Report 2012 amongst others.
