South Africa is a secular state which means that we are - TopicsExpress

South Africa is a secular state which means that we are non-religious/not subject to or bound by religious rule. Our Constitution protects us against Religious partiality. As a matter of fact, in our country we do not have to believe in any God for that matter. This is NOT a prerequisite for being a good person/citizen/student. It is against the law for Government schools to advertise themselves as a Christian School. It is not the duty of the school to enforce any specific religious ideas onto children. Something that is of utmost importance for creating tolerance, unity in diversity, social cohesion, nation-building.... all of the things that we strive for, is to teach children the basics of the enormously wide range of religious and spiritual approaches to enrich their lives and in order for them to define their own views on life. Let us help them to be free-thinking instead of creatures that are scared that they may make the wrong move just in case they will be punished/rejected by Jesus/God. Let us create a space in which they can be free-thinking and in which they are able to form the own views on life. How tolerant can a child be if they are being led to believe that theirs is the only right way? How must they look upon those who do not follow any belief/God? Let us get away with forcing children to practice Christianity in school so that we can begin to create generations of people who who embrace ‘loving one another’, not because we should, but because we are parts of each other.
