South African Airways considering flights from Jberg to Mbeya & Mwanza!!! From an SA Aviation Forum South African Airways (SAA) has plans for direct flights to Mwanza and Mbeya from Johannesburg as the airline seeks to gain a foothold in the lucrative East African aviation industry. The SAA Regional General Manager for Africa and Middle, Aaron Munetsi said in Dar es Salaam over the weekend that the airline had plans for the two routes in Tanzania as their operations in the country have been a success story. In two decades we have increased our flights from Johannesburg to Dar es Salaam from two in a week to 14.Our future plans includes directs flights from Johannesburg to Mbeya and Mwanza, he said at a ceremony to award its clients and stakeholders in the country. The airline was celebrating its twenty years of operations in Tanzania, its 80th Anniversary and 20 years of frequent flyer programme. He said the airline was strategically eying Tanzania to grow to next level its aviation business in East Africa and had pegged its growth in the country on continued peace, stability, economic growth and rosy bilateral relations between Tanzania and South Africa. The 14th flight was only added recently as a mark of confidence the airline has in the East Africas second largest economy. Available information indicates that the airline operates more flights in Dar es Salaam than Nairobi, where it has 11flights per week, which speaks volumes about the confidence with the Tanzanias economy. Mr Munetsi said that in 20 years of operations, the airline has carried almost one million passengers from different parts of the world to and from Tanzania. We are delighted to be operating 14 flights per week on the Johannesburg to Dar Es Salaam route using a combination of our state of the art Airbus A320, and Boeing 737-800 series or Airbus A319 aircraft. This is in line with our focus on growing our footprint on the continent. Increases to the airlines Africa route network are in keeping with SAAs Gaining Altitude strategy, where the focus is on strengthening our presence in Africa, said Munetsi. He said the airline embraces Tanzanian spirit and its operations and management is wholly run by Tanzanians in the country. He said the airline apart from enhancing tourism between the two nations, it was also facilitating development of fisheries, agriculture, mining that takes place in Tanzania, and offering an opportunity for Tanzanian businesses to access international markets through its cargo business from Dar to Johannesburg and vice versa. We have two cargo flights, one per week from Dar- Johannesburg and vice versa.
