South Central railways prepare special action plans to face the Cyclone Lehar. Following are the details * Emergency Control Rooms will start functioning at the Headquarters - Rail Nilayam, Secunderabad and also in the DRM’s offices at Vijayawada, Guntur and Guntakal. Officials from various departments will be present 24 x 7 at these control rooms to monitor the impact of the cyclone in the field on the Railway system and initiate necessary immediate action. * Patrolling of the Railway Tracks by Engineering staff on foot has been taken up both during the day and night period all over the length of the Railway line in the coastal region that is likely to be affected by the approaching Cyclone. *Bridges, bunds, deep cuttings etc. at vulnerable locations on the stretch of Railway track that is likely to bear the brunt of the cyclone have been put on continuous surveillance by positioning stationary watchmen to ensure the safety of the railway structures at these locations. *The Locomotives of trains running on the identified vulnerable coastal sections will be manned by supervisors to keep an eye on the water levels / safety of the areas adjoining the Railway track. With a view to undertake immediate restoration measures in case of any unforeseen circumstances affecting the Railway track, Engineering material trains loaded with sand, boulders, cribs, girders and quarry dust etc. have been kept ready at different locations on Vijayawada Division – at Rajahmundry (16 wagons), Krishna Canal Junction (23 wagons); Bitragunta ( 11 wagons), Allur Road (10wagons) and Manubolu (8 wagons). *To take care of any possible damage to the Over Head Electrical structures/masts etc. due to winds, tower cars with requisite material have been stationed in all readiness at key locations. *Additional Diesel locomotive engines are also kept on standby to operate trains with Diesel locos in case of any disruption to OHE power supply as per need. *Senior Engineering officials will be camping at Eluru and Rajahmundry and a Chief Engineer from SCR headquarters is being deputed to Vijayawada to closely watch the local situation for appropriate intervention. *Close liaison is being maintained by the Railway officials with officials of the State Government to assess the intensity and direction of cyclone Lehar and the speed of wind/extent of rainfall in the affected sections so as to suitably change the pattern of train operations, if needed. *There is a likelihood of modification in the pattern of running of trains over SCR in the wake of cyclone Lehar in the ensuing days, as per the demands of the unfolding situation.
