South Korean thinktank proposal: 5 BKC-like growth centres Giving impetus to the BJP-led Maharashtra government’s plan of creating multiple centres along the lines of the swanky Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a thinktank of the South Korean government has recommended five such growth centres in Mumbai after a year-long study. In a presentation made to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the thinktank of South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has proposed creating growth centres at Vasai-Virar, Bhiwandi, Greater Kalyan, Greater Panvel and Pen-Alibaug. All the centres will be along the proposed 126-km multi-modal corridor, connecting towns such as Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivali, Panvel, Uran, Pen and Alibaug. “They have applied the principles they used in South Korea to develop growth centres around the city. The plan is indicative as of now. It will take more studies on the technological and financial feasibility aspect to actually take up the development of the proposed growth centres. It will require a huge investment,” said a senior MMRDA official, who did not wish to be named. The MMRDA had signed a memorandum of understanding with the South Korean government in October last year to come up with a detailed plan for growth centres along the proposed multi-modal corridor under its own budget.
