Southampton vs. Everton Match Review Nothing really happened in the first half for Everton, Roberto should have played wingers instead of 3 Number 10s to try and stretch this weakened Southampton team and get behind them this way, instead it was lacklustre and there was no penetration or intensity in our play. Barry should have been giving more protection to Distin and Jagielka in their battle against Pelle and Long Clyne and Bertrand were having a good battle between Coleman and Baines without an definite winner. The first goal was justified as it came from what should have probably been a penalty for Southampton in my opinion, the resulting corner was heading in by Romelu Lukaku, who should be doing better there and heading it away rather than ducking and being scared of the ball. The first half didn’t fill me with too much hope, as well as the XI didn’t seem right. As the second half started I would have thought Martinez would have thrown on McGeady or Pienaar to bring more width in the play and move Barkley centrally, but no chances, in fact no changes all game. Ross was the bright spark in the second half, Eto’o started growing into the game as well as play went on, Besic was playing decent, but still no cover for Baines or Coleman to bomb forward from Gareth Barry, and after minutes and minutes of pressure, Southampton win it back, counter attack and it’s 2-0 Southampton. I was shocked to see NO SUBSTITUTIONS from Roberto still, like he didn’t want the game to change, but by the time it was 2-0 it was too late to change the result. Southamptons third came from a good ball from Davis, Yoshida heads it in. The change of tactics and a substitution should have been on at the start of the second half but it just didn’t happen from Roberto even though we were clearly lacking that wide man to stretch Southampton it just didn’t happen. Oh well, we move on to Stoke City at Goodison Park, hopefully we’ll be celebrating 3 points rather than talking about another defeat. Here’s hoping Blues! Come on you Blues!!!! (LJM)
