Sow in Tears Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. PSALM 126: 5 IN WORD Captives had returned to Jerusalem— probably from a long exile in Babylon— and were giddy about being back in the homeland. They were “like men who dreamed” (v. 1), filled with laughter and songs of joy. It was a celebration that satisfied them to their cores. That’s the story anytime God redeems. He brings back captives, and they rejoice. That’s why Israel’s history and the church’s are filled with songs of victory and gratitude and why God’s people are always talking about salvation; it’s glorious. Broken hearts drink in the promise of restoration like desert grounds soak up rain. And God knows exactly what to do with broken hearts. Because God brought His captives back from exile, the prayer of verse 4 and the principle of verses 5-6 are entirely reasonable. Considering who He is, it is the most rational thing in the world for the destitute and hopeless to seek His blessing. It should be natural for those of us who have been redeemed to say, “Restore our fortunes, O LORD.” And we must understand His means for doing so: “Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.” That’s the way of the Kingdom. IN DEED Why is that? Because we live in a fallen world. All around us are deserts, broken dreams, exiles, and hurting hearts. But what begins in sorrow for us ends in laughter and joy. There’s one catalyst that changes everything: God. “The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy” (v. 3). Is that the story of your life? No matter how hopeless your situation, how difficult your struggles, how distant your exile— or, to be more specific, no matter how painful your divorce, your bankruptcy, your unemployment, or your disease— in one way or another, God will bring you back. How do we know? Because that’s what God does. Perhaps you’ve felt captive. You’ve probably sown a few tears too. Don’t worry; God is restoring the homeland— the place of dreams— to His children, and you will reap with songs of joy. Your troubles will end with celebration. WORSHIP THE KING/Tiegreen
