Space, Place and Technologies of Map Making in Late Ottoman and Mandatory Palestine Doctoral students’ workshop, funded by the Alex Carmel Foundation (Tuebingen), 28-30 July, 2015 Venues: University of Tuebingen and State Academy Bad Wildbad (Black Forest) Organizers: Prof. Dr. Johann Buessow and Dr. Yuval Ben-Bassat Over the past few years, the history of Palestine has been one of the most dynamic fields in Middle Eastern history (for a selection of recent books, see Tamari 2008 and 2009, Lemire 2010, Ben-Bassat and Ginio 2011, Buessow 2011, Campos 2011, Jacobson 2011, Lemire 2013, Ben-Bassat 2013, Der Matossian 2014, Gribetz 2014.) At the same time, the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has prevented scholars with Israeli and Palestinian/Arab affiliations to meet and exchange ideas, discuss potential joint projects, or generally interact and provide feedback to their peers. This workshop aims to overcome this state of affairs by building bridges between members of the young generation of Palestinian, Israeli and European academics specializing in the history of late Ottoman and Mandatory Palestine (c. 1800-1948). Participants will be asked to present the key features of their current research interests with a focus on issues of space and place. Lived, perceived and conceived space, as described by Henri Lefebvre (Lefebvre 1974), is an important topic in nearly all recent scholarly works on the history and culture of the ‘Holy Land’. However, the theoretical debates engendered by the ‘spatial turn’ in the humanities and social sciences since the late 1980s has not yet impacted historical research in the region. At the same time, over the last several years, historians have benefitted enormously from the discovery of a considerable number of maps from the Ottoman period. These maps are sources of valuable factual information on Palestinian localities. Nonetheless, as recent research has emphasized, there are important social and cultural dimensions behind the process of producing maps, particularly in a place like the Holy Land that has always attracted international attention. This underscores the vital need to examine the relationships between the imagined and the temporal worlds governing the creation of these maps. This workshop is organized by Prof. Dr. Johann Buessow from the Department of Oriental and Islamic Studies at the University of Tuebingen, and Dr. Yuval Ben-Bassat from the Department of Middle Eastern History at the University of Haifa. Several senior academics specializing in space and place as analytical categories and/or the technologies of map-making will give keynote lectures on their research and lead panel discussions. Deadline for application: February 15, 2015 Please send a paper title, a 500-word abstract and a C.V. to: Johann Buessow: [email protected] Yuval Ben-Bassat: [email protected] Students accepted to the workshop will be eligible for travel grants.
