Spaceteam, not FTL, shall be the theme of my new card game. I am considering two possible approaches to this, and am weighing the pros and cons of each, and would like to hear anyone elses opinion. Option One: Play approximates the game of Spoons. The deck is divided into 60 cards to accomodate 3-6 players. Each card contains a spaceship part (from basic Ionic Fuel Cells to the perplexing Wormhole Surfer), a number, and a color. There is one fewer token in the center of the table than the number of players. The entire deck is dealt. Players must constantly pick up a card from their right and discard a card to their left. The objective is to complete an entire spaceship of any one color and number (each spaceship must have exactly one of each number of the same color). When this is done, the completed hand is quietly lain down in front of the player and a token is grabbed. Once a token has been grabbed, the other players must grab one of the remaning tokens. The last player out (the one who doesnt grab a token) is the loser. Play continues in this way until a threshold has been met. Pros: -Extremely fast gameplay -Little setup -Can be played with 3-6 players Cons: -No real connection to spaceship theme (e.g. could substitute pirate ship, medieval war, etc.) -Not very long or complicated - point threshold could be arbitrary Option Two: Play is similar to above, but instead of constantly passing cards, players take turns trading cards. Players are dealt a random spaceship design (one of each of six parts: engine, hull, shields, weapon, warp drive, cargo.) Each players turn takes five seconds, counted by a timer (windup timer included *ding*s every five seconds). Each player must, in that five seconds, ask for a required card. If nobody has the card, player must draw an additional card. Play continues until one player has completed their ship. Winner gets a point; tally points until a threshold (5? 10? 20? will need playtesting) is reached. Pros: -Fast, hectic gameplay -Sounds funny as hell Cons: -Could be frustrating for some players who need more time Thoughts?
