Spain international, David Villa, will join Melbourne City on a 10-match loan deal ahead of playing in the MLS next season. Villa will join New York City FC, owned by Manchester Citys owners, but will first be send to Australia to maintain his match fitness. The new season in the US won’t start until February 2015 and Villa would be left with eight-month break after the World Cup. The 32-year-old is Spains all-time record goal-scorer with 56 goals in 94 caps and has indicated he will retire from international football after the World Cup. Obviously its my last World Cup and that probably also means my last appearances for Spain. I think that, considering my age and everything Ive given, the time has come,” he told Marca. Villa scored 13 goals for Atletico as the Madrid-based club won their first La Liga title in 18 years last season, while they were also 90 seconds away from winning the Champions League. His loan move means David Villa will have gone from Champions League football to Australia’s domestic competition within the space of about four months. -SN
