Spaniards Demand USA Release the Cuban 5 Imprisoned in U.S. Madrid, Jun 9 .- The movement of solidarity with Cuba in Catalonia, Spain, submitted a request to the U.S. consulate in Barcelona for a change in policy towards the island, and the release of three Cubans being held prisoners in the United States. In September, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino and Antonio Guerrero will mark 16 years since their arrest in Miami, where they were monitoring terrorist plans against their country. These three men are part of the group internationally known as the Cuban Five, along with Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who have returned to Cuba after completing excessively long prison sentences. The men were condemned at a trial in Miami which a federal appeals court and the U.N. commission on arbitrary detention have agreed was unfair. The movement of solidarity with Cuba in Catalonia denounced that not only in the United States but also in Europe, news about the case and the many requests for the mens release, presented to the U.S. presidency from human rights organizations, have been silenced. A report from the website Cubainformacion stated that during the activity held this weekend in front of the U.S. consulate in Barcelona, posters were carried and slogans were shouted, demanding that President Barack Obama release the three Cubans who remain imprisoned. Members of organizations involved in the protest included the platform against the blockade Defense of Cuba and other groups, and said they will continue their rallies until all of the Five are released. In parallel, the Madrid Committee for the Release of the Cuban Five convened a rally at the Puerta del Sol plaza on Thursday, June 12, at 20:00 local hour, to demand the immediate release of the three Cubans still being held in U.S. prisons. Cubainformacion recalled that some 13 legislators of the Parliament in Catalonia signed a letter addressed to President Barack Obama demanding their release. (Prensa Latina)
