Spanish Catholicism was marked, perhaps indelibly, by its long struggle against Islam. It lives on the genetics, the musical beats and attitudes of Spain. There is another Foreign Legion, beside the French. The Legion Espanola, or Spanish Legion, whose motto was Viva La Muerte or Long Live Death. Their traditional marching song is El Novio de la Muerte, which is actually of quite recent provenance. The translation is the Bridgegrooms of Death and it is about a Legionaire who joins up and fights with suicidal bravery to rejoin his lost love in death in compansionship with the brave men of the Legion Espanola.
