Spanish Word of the Day euskera, noun Basque Spoken by over half a million people in the Western Pyrenees, euskera is not related to any other European tongue, and is one of Spain’s five officially recognized languages. Under the Franco government its use was banned. However, from the 1950s onwards it underwent a revival, partly because of the creation of ikastolas, Basque language schools. Under the autonomous government of the Basque Country, teaching it in schools has been a cornerstone of educational policy. Basque words you may come across in relation to Basque issues are el lendakari, the head of the autonomous government, and la Ertzaintza, the Basque police force. Notice that like all names of languages in Spanish euskera does not begin with a capital letter.
