Spanning The Mersey From Lever Brothers in house Progress magazine 1960s The Longest river crossing in the British isles and the largest of its kind in the world, That is the £26,000.000 project recommended as a necessity in a special report on future crossings of the river Mersey. The report was issued by the Canadian Traffic Research corporation who prepared the Merseyside Area Land use transportation study - a blueprint for the areas transport future over the next 2o years. The MALTS team say that tests confirm the need for a third, six lane crossing as well as a duplication of the second Mersey Tunnel. The bridge would need to be over 9000 ft long with towers 430 ft high to span the river between otterspool and a point near clatterbridge hospital. On the Cheshire side of the river the bridge would pass close to Magazine Village and the Stork Margarine works at Bromborough. The bridge would be of cable cantilever construction with a navigation headroom of 155 ft and provide clear navigation openings of 1900ft wide at the Eastham and Garston channels. A flyover Junction it is thought can be provided to link the New Chester Road and also to join the Mid Wirral Motorway For more pictures and stories from Port Sunlight visit.. https://facebook/groups/964598270220363/
