Wine List: - Thibaut-Janisson Blanc de Chardonnay N.V. - Virginia Fizz - Champagne Janisson & Fils - Brut Tradition - Brut Rosé - Brut Grand Cru - Grand Cru Rosé This session will be presented by winemaker Claude Thibaut. About Thibaut-Janisson Thibaut-Janisson was born from a long friendship that began in a Grand cru village in the Champagne region of France. Thibaut and his friend Manuel Janisson, both from champagne-producing families in the town, started in the family businesses at a young age. When Thibaut came to work in California in 1983, he had already spent a few years working in Australia, and Janisson was looking for some experience working in California. Thibaut arranged for Janisson to come work with him and the two young men began talking of one day producing a sparkling wine together. About 25 years later, they agreed that Virginia would be the place to do it. Thibaut came to Charlottesville with his wife in 2003 to consult at Kluge Estate Winery. In 2005, after seeing the potential for Virginia sparkling wine, Thibaut and Janisson began their joint venture, and in 2007 they had the first release of their nonvintage Blanc de Chardonnay. Virginia Fizz sparkling wine followed in the Spring of 2011. About Champagne Janisson & Fils Champagne Janisson is a fourth-generation estate located in Verzenay in the heart of the Reims mountains. The vineyard has been given Champagne’s highest “Grand cru” quality rating of Pinot noir. On the exposed slopes, the limestone reflects the sun’s warming rays to provide sugar levels in the grapes that are perfect for Champagnes. The traditional family house in Champagne makes each of its different cuvées in a highly personalized way. About wine tasting organizer Claire Morin-Gibourg Journalist for 15 years, she has worked for some of the most prestigious press outlets specializing in wine: La Revue du Vin de France, Gault & Millau, Cuisine Gourmande and other titles focusing on this particular area. Author of the book Comment bien acheter son vin? (How to Properly Choose and Buy Your Wine?) with French critics Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve. For 5 years, she held the position of director at the tasting school of Grains Nobles in Paris. Established in Washington, DC since 2009, she continues to share her passion for wine. Recommendations to enhance your experience - Prior to wine tasting: 1) To have a fresh palate, we recommend avoiding candy / gum after 4p.m. and not snacking on anything after 6p.m. 2) For the full aromatic experience, we recommend that you do not apply or reapply any cologne / perfume this afternoon prior to the event. - During wine tasting: 1) Keep hydrated. Drink water during the tasting, it will not change the quality or taste of the wine you are trying. 2) Drink responsibly. Those little ounces of wine add up. 3) Swirl, smell and spit as much as you want – That’s what those spittoons are for. 4) Eat bread during the tasting. It has no impact on the quality of the wine and it helps you wait until food is served.
