Spatial awareness has been a focus this week for our toddlers and pre-schoolers. This refers to our children being aware of their personal space, and having the ability to manoeuvre themselves around without bumping into things! This is where the use of toys that require pushing in front or pulling behind come in handy, as children learn to look ahead, plan ahead, and make movements or adjustments to themselves and/or the toy to avoid obstacles that may be in their path. Obstacle courses at home are great to help develop spatial awareness, as children go over, under and through things. Using these concept words also helps with their understanding of space and directionality: words such as up, down, over, under, and for our older kids, near and far. Scooters and bike riding are also great tools for our over 2’s to help develop not only their spatial awareness, but laterality and coordination as well.
