Spc. Gerardo Reyes, a health care specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery Aid Station, 41st Field Artillery Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division based at Fort Hood, Texas, explained contents of his combat medical bag to students at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton, as well as to tell his “Army Story” recently. Reyes visited Turner HS along with Staff Sgt. Brian Koerner of the Carrollton Recruiting Center as part of the Total Army Involvement in Recruiting program. TAIR is a promotional program that engages the Army and its Soldiers in an effort to educate students and generate community support by providing recruiters with personnel and equipment they need to tell the Army story and reach citizens within the community and schools. Reyes deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 as a combat medic in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. His duties there included administering emergency medical treatment to battlefield casualties, assisting with outpatient and inpatient care and treatment and emergency evacuation. He said that he endeavored to complete any task presented to him and maintain proficiency in his specialty to support and accomplish the mission. “Being in a combat unit, I quickly learned that being a medic came with additional responsibilities. Through field exercises and additional training I quickly became very knowledgeable and diverse with many taskings and responsibilities,” he said. “The Army gave me the opportunity to work, live and travel to places that I would never had a chance to see as well as train and serve with some amazing soldiers.” It’s no secret that most Americans have had little or no actual interaction with Soldiers or others members of the military and consequently, base perceptions on what they might see on television or in magazines. The TAIR program helps to inform in a more factual manner and demonstrate what Soldiers typically do in their everyday lives, whether they are in garrison or deployed overseas.
